Samoa

History, Problems, and Progress in E Waste Recycling In-Country Waste has been accumulating in Samoa for decades. The country does not have the volume to be able to set up a recycling facility so they are unable to set up a recycling plant. From vehicles to oil to electronics to plastics, waste has nowhere to go. It is impossible for the country to move low-value waste such as plastic, e-waste, and oil waste to overseas countries for recycling.
E-Wasters Services and Special Practices In-Country Samoa has now a partnership with Swire Shipping that offers cargo space to take waste to recycling abroad for free. The partnership between the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme and China Navigation Company, part of the Swire Group, provides a way to offload recyclable waste from Samoa and other Pacific countries to recycling facilities abroad. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) helped facilitate the agreement. UNEP has also provided 100 waste oil collection sites and is working to support collection of other types of waste.
